It’s always a day at the beach with Darcy Sang of Pearl Beach Paperie. This paper diva is definitely someone you need to know if you have a special event that requires a special way of announcing it. Her company Pearl Beach Paperie offers custom printing for business and social engagements and her products are fabulous. We had the honor of meeting with Darcy not too long ago and asked her a few questions about her company.

How did you come up with your company name and what’s the significance of it?
The name came pretty easily to me. “Pearl” is named after my paternal grandmother’s English name. It is also part of my Chinese name, which translates to Silver Pearl. “Beach” comes from loving the feeling that being at the beach can give you – a sense of calm, fun and surrounded by friends. I hope to create the same sort of environment in my client meetings (without the sunburn). “Paperie” came into play because no one was going to know what kind of a business “Pearl Beach” is without another describing words…plus it rolled off the tongue nicely. When I called my sister to see what she thought of the name, she told me the place where she and my brother-in-law honeymooned was at Pearl Beach in Bora Bora. I had no idea that such a place existed, but all seemed like it was meant to be. Pearl Beach Paperie was born!

What’s your background and how did you get started with your business?
Funny enough, my background is in film in television. I worked in the entertainment field for ten years before I decided that I desired a new path in life. I was actually introduced to the world of printing about the same time that I started working in film. My mom bought a printing franchise that I helped out from time to time throughout high school and college. I even worked in the family business for a couple of years full-time. While I learned the ins and outs of printing, paper and design, my love for fine stationery grew on me over the years. Then the light finally went on, I could put my film producing skills to the test using my business and creative skills to start my own business.

What’s your style and or business philosophy?
I believe that every event deserves a great announcement. I get such great joy in helping people bring luxurious paper into their lives, whether that is creating the perfect invitation for your wedding, picking out personal stationery to keep in touch with friends or choosing the best way to announce your newborn. I love being a small part in peoples’ happiest events in their lives.

What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do?
I know I mentioned a few things above, but one thing that I truly love is when I hear from a client months after I have worked with them to create their wedding invitations to share their wedding day photos with me. It puts a smile on my face that they remembered me after months have passed. I feel a connection with all my clients and it is rewarding to think that they share that feeling enough with me to share such sweet memories.

What makes you different from your competition?
I feel like my personal service sets me apart. I consider myself a mobile boutique. By that, I mean, that I come to them. We meet over coffee in a relaxed atmosphere and chat about what they are looking for…it’s not a pressure sales environment, there is no one kicking them out of the chair at a certain time…just a couple of friends hanging out drinking coffee.

On another front, there is a reason that I incorporated the word “Beach” into my business name. #1 so that I have an excuse to wear flip-flops 365 days out of the year and #2 because I consider the beach to be a peaceful and relaxing place that people enjoy being with their friends and family. That is my goal – to have a positive and relaxing time hanging out with my clients, just as you would with your friends for a day at the beach. There should be no stress and you should leave the meeting not only a caffeine high, but high on life.

What is your definition of success?
Good question! Success is when I receive a letter from a client thanking me for my assistance, how thrilled they were with their experience and the end result. Success is creating a friendship from a working relationship. Success is being happy with the choices I have made in my life and learning from my mistakes. I’d be a fool to say that financial success is not important because I am a businesswoman after all, but the personal gain is so much greater!

Who or what are your inspirations?
I am inspired every day! A beautiful bouquet of flowers, rain gushing from a swollen gutter, a photograph that can stop you in your tracks, an ornate fabric, a dog chasing a Frisbee or the moon casting shadows…anything and everything can be inspirational…you just have to open your mind and eyes to it. Personally, I would have to say that the women in my family inspire me as well. They are so strong and have persevered so much in their lives and still manage to see a ray of sunshine through it all. There are always those days where you need the sun to shine through to see the rainbow.

Anything else you want to add:
I don’t advertise. I rely on word of mouth and am thankful that so many people have been incredibly generous to me. This has allowed me to continue down my passionate path of paper.
